Engaging in a Conversation: Real Learning First
Alberta's future depends on holding our schools accountable for real learning first...
Cultural diversity, economic uncertainty, environmental sustainability, technological innovation - against the backdrop of the complex challenges and opportunities Albertans share, it is time to reconsider what we hold our public education system responsible for. This will be the key message of the internationally acclaimed writer and consultant, Dr. Pasi Sahlberg, who will be speaking at Bellerose Composite High School (49 Giroux Road St. Albert), Monday, March 22, 2010, 6:30 - 8:00 pm.
Engaging in a Conversation: Real Learning First, co-sponsored by the Sturgeon Local #27, Greater St. Albert Catholic Local #23 and St. Albert Protestant Separate #73 of the Alberta Teachers' Association, is an evening where school community members are invited to engage in a conversation about what we truly value in our schools and what we consider as indicators of success. Dr. Sahlberg will challenge us as education partners.
Dr. Sahlberg will not only describe the growing international trends in education but will also outline Alberta examples of schools attempting to broaden what it means to be educated. Following the presentation by Dr. Sahlberg, as education partners we will engage in a conversation around three key questions:
1. What do we want from and expect of our schools?
2. How do we know if we are being successful in meeting these desires and expectations?
3. What education policies and practices will support and encourage the kind of teaching and learning we will need in the next decade?
Pasi Sahlberg is an educator, researcher and school improvement activist. He has global experience in educational reforms, training teachers and leaders, coaching schools to change and advising education policy-makers.
